ruede hagelsteins the modest theme has proven to be one of souvenirs most provocative releases so far. released in the summer, the tracks dramatic horn hook is so epic it belongs in a science fiction film and as a piece of forward thinking techno, it ranks among one of souvenirs best. now the track is back with a remix from souvenir spearheads tiefschwarz alongside a new track from berlin based ruede. semikolon is another dark and dubby deep tech-housy outing for ruede that begins with a dramatic spoken word by naneci and ominous organ stabs. as the track progresses it takes on a chicago house vibe re-imagined at 10am in the panorama bar. an urgent bell begins to ring through the track raising the tension as the vocal intones a surreal chant before giving way to huge synth stabs that lead the track into a slow motion emotional explosion. just when things can get any more hectic the crescendo sinks to silence compressing the energy before the beats emerge back in their earlier deep house guise. ali and bast schwarz take their turn at remixing the modest theme fresh from their incendiary remix of emad kamandians kamanche for souvenir 012. the signature dramatic horn riff remains albeit injected with new percussion lending the track a tough tech house appeal that places it within the context of 2008s underground house sound. both tracks are another addition to souvenirs impressive collection of music aimed at the head just as much as they are at the heart and feet.

its been a while since the last release by mark august on connaisseur, but now hes back with an extraordinary one. two tracks, both like a fairytale of a country far, far away. a fable, with mystic and mysterious animals and creatures, might best describe what mark had in mind while working on the tracks. the wasps from tunisia and the silver piggy – the main track on this release is an uncommon piece of music. it starts moody and with a stoic pumping beat, yet also a somehow laidback feeling. it then unexpectedly and surprisingly builds up to a monster of a track, working manically towards its climax. then however, over the length of the track, it completely transforms again, coming back to its beginning, as though nothing had ever happened. scorpions groove is a deep and dubby affaire.

the fabric mix cd done by the glimmers featured a version of this adonis cover done by this portugese art band (big in the 80s). this 12inch has a brand new 12 min long remix done by adonis himself b/w a steve poindexter remix of >querelle< and a circle jerk dub of adoniss classic no way back.

this is quite simply one of the most glorious records you will hear this year. it would be easy to lazily reference it against classic period rephlex/planet mu stuff (oops, i just did!), and indeed it appears to share some of the same heritage (even going so far as to feature a remix of rephlex artist global goon in its tracklisting) - but chris leary aka ochre is obviously a man on his own mission. gorgeously lush, but at the same time super-funky…as electronic as kraftwerk starring in a remake of tron, yet somehow as pastoral and organic as edward elgar…much like his label-mate ed chamberlain, leary manages that tricky task of being supremely technical in his programming and arrangements, but without losing the heart and soul of the music amidst all the studio trickery. you know that old chestnut often said when referring to vintage or classic music, >they dont make them like that any more<? well they do…and here it is! simply fantastic.

after 3 succesfull releases, this label has slowly proven it self. stephane signore, the headhoncho of the label, has gathered a nice selection of artists around the label so far. wehbba, hertz, pedro delgardo, reaky and others. this 4th release is the next stephane signore single. on this release he has delivered 2 absolute monster tracks, and asked reaky and lars klein to deliver their remixes. lars klein brings his 2008 minimal inspired techno burner. clicks and bits with a techno attitude. reaky, one of the most succesfull new comers to this game, takes it into a completely other direction, a well funky tribal explosion with a subtle throbbing bassline vibe. proper, rolling techno for the masses!

played by sebo k, karotte... layo and bushwacka! are equally at home turning out summery housey affairs as they are peak time stormers, and >now is the time / the time was then definitely fits into the latter category. a double header, the loose concept behind the release is to represent the sound of the dancefloor now versus the sound from a few years ago. >now is the time< has its feet placed firmly in 2008 - a crisp, clean techno bassline, topped by hand claps, snatches of breathy female vocal, and full of an irresistible array rattles, whooshes and other indefinable sounds that the duo seem to pull from the depths of their imaginations. it breaks with some simple electronic sounding chords and a stirring martin luther king sample that makes this record so memorable. >the time was then< is based around that same sample, but gives a cheeky nod to a few years back, with a bassline and keys that wouldnt have sounded out of place on their seminal ‘night works’ album. it never goes too far towards nostalgia, though, and either would rip up a late night dancefloor

elevate, if you remember, is the deep house label from daniel bell that put out a series of influential records in the late 90’s including the first 12 from theo parrish. these releases are still very much in demand and are going for high collectors prices online. it is now the summer of 2008 and elevate is proud to present a new release, this time from baaz. baaz is a new artist with only a few releases so far including tracks on sascha dive’s deep vibes label and a full e.p. on sthlmaudio. baaz may hail from southern germany but you would swear he grew up in the same detroit neighborhood as mike huckaby or moodymann when you hear his warm, gentle and deeply hypnotic house music.

for flash lützenkirchen delivers three very classy dancefloor burners. first up there is >enter the moonlight<, an enchanting piece of thumping peak time business. a big bass, pumping beats and some great oriental sounds combined with far-out effects create a unique atmosphere. modern styles meet oldskool feelings! >on the shore< is even more oldskool than that. the fat and wobbly bassline pushes the track forward and creates the perfect antagonism to the warm effects and clicky minimal beats. the highlight - however - is the wonderfully written melodic piano piece that turns this track from wicked into wow! beautiful and tough, oldskool and fresh, slick and funky - all at the same time. this one is going to be huge. listen for yourself! at last there is >pokemon companion<, a more direct and solid piece of minimal tech. a drum’n bass like powerfully grumbling bass, and yet another memorable synthie pattern that seems to grow out of the buzzing loop like a spring flower out of wet grass - naturally and wonderful!

the polytechnics ep is the second release on df by silver city following the superb dubby ep from 2006. on the a side, the title track polytechnics has electrofunk vibes blending perfectly with new wave sensibilities. think greg wilson mixing up gary numan and you wont be far off. it rocks! and on the flip, nu disco don pete herbert (reverso 68/lsb) cuts up pendulo a heavily arrpegiated disco stormer and transforms it into yet another disco bomb. this was an edit that pete knocked together for his own dj sets and we loved it so much we just had to put it on the vinyl. last, but in no way least, is victoria jam which is a no nonsense heads down groover of a track that will get your dancefloors rocking. seriously good music. enjoy! plays by: ashley beedle, llorca, fabrice lig, electric press, reverso 68, munk, murray richardson, ajello, dubious...

for this second release the indigo raw crew proudly presents >dominus< who are dominic & mirus, two fresh and upcoming producers from barcelona. their first release tarantella ep is a three tracker that brings you directly into the deep chemistry of modern tech-house. on the a side >skin< is a driving warm up tune with deep cords and rolling grooves while >tarantella< builds up with pumping beats and fluffy pads. sian (octopus/poker flat) also delivers one of his best remixes so far adding hypnotic atmospheres and rolling baselines that makes it a perfect peak time tune for the crowds

for the new album, liars and prayers, thalia has expanded upon her touring band of the last few years of daniel coughlin (drums) and david curry (viola, trumpet) to fill out the sound with the bass and piano of winston braman (consonant, sherperdess, fuzzy) and mel lederman (victory at sea). liars and prayers is the masterwork of her thus far impressive career. her voice and songs have never been stronger and the full band and the recording by andrew schneider (unsane, cave in) allows her to combine the delicacy of the arrangements of her trio with the force that was her band come. the very moving body memory is a poignant example of this perfect synthesis.

that patterns is one of the number 1 techno labels is already a fact. with releases by borique tribez, elton d, eric sneo, carl falk and dejan milicevic to name only a few last year was definitely one of the best years for patterns so far. the number 42 welcomes an extra cheeky one.
